Ghana flights and airlines

Many airlines offer flights to Ghana. You can get direct flights from London Heathrow and London Gatwick, from Amsterdam and from Atlanta. Flights are constantly changing, as tours in Ghana become more popular and new airlines start flying to Ghana.

Prices vary so check several and check regularly. They can be more expensive at Christmas, when many Ghanaians return home. They can also vary depending on the day of the week.

Take care with web sites which offer flights for £170/$500/Euro250.These will be excluding taxes, at best.

Most of the Cheap flight offers which appear in the right hand column of a Google search for Ghana flights will be offering headline costs which are ex-tax.

Opodo is an exception and again in late 2011, offers £428 Brussels Airlines, £448 Alitalia, £490 KLM, £510 EgyptAir, up to £640 British Airways. These are typical flights costs and differentials for any time over the past four years.

Taxes alone from the UK are £350 at November 2011.

Many cheap flights web sites do not do Ghana flights. Online booking is also not usually possible.

I have used airlines including British Airways, direct from London Heathrow; KLM via Amsterdam; Alitalia via Rome; Air Maroq via Casablanca, Afriquiyah airlines via Casablanca or Tripoli, Air Egypt via Cairo.

From the US, Delta Airlines flies direct from Denver and New York.

From the UK, Alitalia, British Airways, Afriquiyah Airlines and Ghana International Airlines fly direct.

You can also fly direct from Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels and Amsterdam.

There are also flights to most countries in north and West African, and to South Africa.
All International flights are through Kotoka International airport at Accra (ACC) [4]. Also, Kotoka International airport at Accra (ACC) is very central and there are always Airport Shuttles and lots of taxis available to connect you to other parts of the City. The recently refurbished airport is small, with a departure lounge that can become cramped when multiple flights are due for take off.

United Airlines started to fly to Accra from Washington Dulles (IAD)in June of 2010. Delta Air Lines serves Accra from New York City (JFK)and Atlanta with four flights per week. British Airways (daily) and Virgin Atlantic (Thu- Sun) fly from London Heathrow, and Astraeus flies from London Gatwick. The Royal Dutch airlines (KLM) flies daily from Schiphol, Amsterdam. Lufthansa and Alitalia maintain daily direct flights from Frankfurt and Milan respectively, with a short stop in Lagos, Nigeria. Emirates flies daily non-stop from Dubai in the Middle East (with connections to Asia and the Far East). Ethiopian Airlines flies four weekly non-stops from Addis Ababa (with stopover, you can visit another African country). Also Egypt Air flies non-stop to Accra. Also, South African Airways flies four times a week non-stop from Johannesburg. If coming from Brazil or nearby, the flight from Rio to Luanda, Angola on Angola Airlines would be the shortest. From there, you can go non-stop to Accra. Turkish Airlines flies from ?stanbul to Accra with four flights per week, with a stop in Lagos.

The lowest fares to Ghana outside of Africa are usually from London, but that doesn’t necessarily mean British Airways is the cheapest (i.e. a transfer inside continental Europe may be required). Afriqiyah Airways is one of the cheapest airlines maintaining flights to Accra, from London Gatwick via Tripoli. Those living in North America might be able to save by getting a cheap ticket to London from their home country. (Beware that there are two separate London international airports, Gatwick and Heathrow, and allow lots of connection time.)
the headline lowest cost flights on web sites often do not include taxes, and are not always available in any case.

Always try several such sources for the best offer. Also check the terms and conditions, deposits may be non-refundable and changes in dates may not be possible. There can be booking charges, expensive credit card percentages, etc.

Apart from the trimmings such as in flight meals, airlines provide similar services. Luggage allowance however can vary, with 25 kg being normal but some airlines offering a higher allowance.

Phone line cheap flights offers can produce some good deals. But the people on the other end of the phone may not offer you the best flight available. Always try several such bucket shops, ask others if they can beat your current best price, and be wary about deposits, terms and conditions.
