Homowo festival and traditional rituals

If you are in Accra right now its Homowo – different areas of old Accra – Ningua, Jamestown, Usshertown, will celebrate at different weekends. There are ritual offerings of mashed maize, lots of people on the streets, loud sound systems set up. Celebration includes marching down roads and streets beating drums, chanting, face painting, singing and traditional dances. Streets in the old town will be blocked off. There will be rituals at chief’s palaces’, at traditional shrines, and at Korle Lagoon. Enjoy!

Ghana beads and crafts at London Bead Fair

I will be at the Bead Society of Great Britain’s Bead Fair showing Ghana beads and crafts and talking about Ghana tours.

Visit us for Ghana powder glass beads, recycled cast brass “cire perdu” beads, recycled plastic beads, and hand polished bauxite beads, and some Peruvian painted clay (single colour) beads. All made by hand and bought by me directly from the producers on a Fair Trade basis.

Plus selected historic bead samples and curiosities, Mali clay beads, cast brass charms…

Anyone interested in visiiting Ghana should come along. I will be happy to talk to you about Ghana crafts and tours and you can also watch videos of our Ghan tours communities and artisans.

Uxbridge College is a modern London Academy just half a mile from the M40 and close to the M4 and M25. Parking will be available.

Uxbridge has a thriving shopping centre (The Chimes) with its own car park not far from the college, and there are tube connections via the Picadilly and Metropolitan lines to Uxbridge Station. Click here for printable walking route from Uxbridge Underground Station to Uxbridge College.

The college has a huge car park (nearly 500 spaces) which will be just for our use. Although Uxbridge College’s address is Park Road, if you are coming by car, the entrance to the car park (in a one-way system) is from Gatting Way (not from Park Road which is the exit).

The Gatting Way entrance can be accessed by SatNav using the post code UB8 1NQ.

Great Ghana Map source

If you are doing remote independent travel in Ghana, or you just like maps, check out this Texas on line map store – far and away the best maps I’ve seen of Ghana… they are over fifty years out of date, no Volta Lake! But very detailed on waterways, contours. Made by the US military based on British Surveys presumably, and a great way to virtually travel the county.

Ghana flight costs coming down

Great News – Ghana flight costs are coming down. Virgin Airlines launched direct flights to Ghana in May 2010, followed by Brussels Airlines in October last year. Brussels is fighting hard to get its share with flights £167 excluding taxes in December, then in January they introduced a £104 flight. Now its down to £85 return – with taxes and “fees” a return trip in the next month could be as little as £450.
